1847 Victorian Diamond & Pearl Ring
£1,100.00

A breathtaking early Victorian 18ct gold split pearl and old-cut diamond mourning ring, with concealed vacant locket compartment. This unusually shaped ring features four lustrous split pearls, set like the leaves of a four-leaf clover, surrounding a glittering diamond and framed by a decadent engraved band. The band is complete with shapely shoulders and foliate decoration to the surround for a truly handsome finish.

This ring bears hallmarks for London, 1847; the same year that Emily Jane Brontë published her only novel - the gothic romance ‘Wuthering Heights’- under her pen name of "Ellis Bell." Criticised for its strangeness and moral ambiguity, yet praised for its originality, brilliance and imaginative power, Wuthering Heights has remained a novel of great intrigue and become a lasting legacy in the canon of English Literature. Dante Gabriel Rosetti once described it as “a fiend of a book, an incredible monster.”

Emily passed only a year after her book was published, in 1848 at the age of 30. Her sister Charlotte wrote that “her nature stood alone.” The underside of this ring bears the marks of history; a personal engraving, reading E.F. 2nd of April 1858.

“I can not live without my life! I can not live without my soul!”

~ Emily Jane Brontë, Wuthering Heights
